BACKGROUND

Diocese of Aweil, Relief and Development (DARD) was founded in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, South Sudan in 2011 as a development Wing for the Diocese of Aweil. DARD is a non-profit making, humanitarian and developmental Christian National Organization which was founded in 2010 and legally registered with Relief and Rehabilitation Commission in the Republic of South Sudan with registration number 147.

Its major strategic programs include Food Security and Livelihoods, Water and Sanitation program (WASH) Education, Protection (GBV & Child protection programs) Peace Building and Reconciliation as well as Evangelism. DARD overall goal is to encourage sustainable rural development and empower marginalized groups through training and improvement of agriculture, which is a long –term strategy for increasing food production and food security while conserving and managing natural resources. Our aim is to meet the needs of present and future generation by promoting development that does not degrade the environment and is technically appropriate, economically viable and socially acceptable.

Since the inception, the organization has carried out many programs ranging from Food security, Health and HIV/AIDS prevention programs, supporting education programs like school construction and renovation e.g. St. Mary High school in Maper and St. Joseph Primary school in Mathiang Aweil Town respectively here in Northern Bahr el Ghazal State.

OUR MANDATE:

DARD has a mandate to contribute to the economic growth and sustainable development of South Sudan. This mandate places education, WASH, Evangelism and agriculture as main pillars for improving households’ economy as the country focuses on achieving a significant level of food security and economic growth.

Our emphasis is on eradication of illiteracy, environmental protection, food security and livelihoods, In order to achieve these, the capacity building of DARD is necessary in order to provide leadership and be able to provide needed services.

 

OUR ROLES

  • Collaborating with State Ministry of education and other government organs, UN Agencies, International Organizations and National Organizations in developmental and humanitarian programs.
  • Evaluating and strategizing to improve the management and delivery of all its function.
  • Creating and monitoring an environment for enhancing productivity and competitiveness in food security and livelihoods sector.
  • Improve standards of living of IDPs, Returnees, and vulnerable community members and their families as well.
  • Promote the sustainable utilization of the counties farming land and other natural resources.
  • Ensure food security at both state/ counties household’s level.
  • Improve the profitability of agriculture and increase investment in agriculture.
  • Improve sanitation and hygiene of communities /households.
  • Promotion of Evangelism to the communities supported with various sectors.

 

OUR OBJECTIVES:

To develop programmes for resources centers and education at primary and secondary levels and non-formal education for school dropouts, out-of school children, working children, adolescent girls and adults.

To encourage and support farmers in Agriculture production for collective access to inputs, improved production and marketing, of quality and quantity produce for sustainable food security.

To promote access to safe and portable water, good sanitation and hygiene using participatory methods. 

To provide a forum/platform for community and stakeholder to discuss issues and formulate integrated and cross-sectional strategies on sustainable utilization and management of community resources, health systems, strengthening, and resource management and environment conservation.

To facilitate the public with life training skills for the management and control of reproductive health rights problems.

To alleviate poverty and enhance social institutions.

To promote cultural values through social interactions.

Promote peace and co-existence among the community in Aweil and South Sudan as a whole

 

ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE

DARD being a National organization operating in Northern Bahr el Ghazal, has employed technical staff of different skills and qualifications who help in technical implementation of projects that the organization is implementing and who are directly reporting to the Board of Directors for any decision making issues on behalf of the community members.

The above structure was designed by the general board of trustees and all the staffs employed in different categories above have been trained on the following project management skills which are important in implementation of the current proposed projects.

  • 2 Laptops
  • 1 plot with office premises
  • 6 Solar panels with batteries
  • Office furniture

                            Current projects

  • Food Security: DARD is Implementing Food For Education (FFE) in Aweil Center and Aweil Town, DARD is currently supporting 44 primary and 2 Secondary schools in various counties in Aweil Town, Aweil centre and par of Aweil West, through Food For Education (FFE)  In this partnership, DARD deliver assorted food to schools for example:
  1. 1.      Cereals 120 grams per a child per day,
  2. 2.      pulses  30 grams per a child per day,
  3. 3.      vegetable oil 10 grams per a child per a day and
  4. 4.       salt 4 grams per child per day total to 164 grams per child/day
  • WASH: DARD implements WASH activities in Aweil Centre, Aweil West, Aweil South, Aweil East and Aweil North Counties through training on Hygiene and sanitation.
  • Agricultural production through supporting farmers with seeds and tools to 6 farmer groups of farmers in Aweil Centre.
  • Construction and renovation of ECSS schools in Aweil Town (St. Mary and St. Joseph)

 

  • Capacity Building: DARD has recently entered into partnership with United Nations Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS) to implement Women Resource Centre funded under Quick Impact Project- RRP Unit within UNMISS. This resource centre will be used by women and community leadership for tailoring, peace meetings, and trainings/workshops. DARD has qualified staff with relevant skills and with experienced engineers. DARD covers former Northern Bahr el Ghazal States and it plans to open coordination offices in Wanyjok, Nyamlel and Juba respectively.

 

  •  Peace Building: DARD implements peace building projects through conduction of trainings to local communities giving them conflict management skills to strengthen their local mechanisms to be able to problem solvers.
